The Role: 

The Electrical, Instrumentation, Controls and Telecom (EIC&T) Senior Group Manager functions as part of the Catch Engineering leadership team, providing management and strategic direction for all electrical, instrumentation, controls and telecommunication engineering & design services and staff.

The EIC&T Manager is responsible for the EIC&T team’s output of professional work products (PWPs), ensuring that quality and timeliness meet or exceed Catch Engineering and client expectations. To do this, the Manager will possess strong skills in team and person management, as well as expert-level technical proficiency in electrical engineering, instrumentation, controls, and/or telecommunications and design.

The EIC&T Manager may also provide services in a secondary role as a Project Engineer, technical subject matter expert (SME) or Project Manager, based on the resourcing needs of the company.

Areas of Accountability:

The EIC&T Manager is responsible for:

EIC&T operations, strategy, and execution:

  • Develop standards, procedures, and policies that ensure the quality and efficiency of EIC&T engineering and technical services output (in conjunction with the VP of Engineering).

  • Monitor department practices for the development of professional work products (PWPs) and ensure execution is in line with the expectations of Catch Engineering’s Professional Practice Management Plan (PPMP).

  • Manage quality, licensing and use of EIC&T engineering, instrumentation, controls and telecom software and calculation tools.

  • Manage disbursement of department spending budgets for training, overhead allowance, compensation adjustment, and other items.

  • Maintain knowledge of emerging technologies and trends in engineering to ensure Catch Engineering remains innovative in delivering EIC&T outputs.

  • Build and maintain relationships with other professionals and organizations in the industry.

  • Partake in business development tasks including:

    • Assist Business Development team in providing technical input into marketing materials, presentations, and meetings with prospective new clients, as it pertains to electrical engineering, electrical design, instrumentation, controls and/or telecom services.

    • Leverage industry contacts and relationships to identify potential new work with existing clients or prospective new clients.

EIC&T staff oversight and management:

  • Execution of performance evaluations, 121 meetings and career development for direct reports and team leads.

  • Hiring, termination, and conflict resolution for all direct reports, aligning with operational requirements and strategy.

  • Assessment and continuous evaluation of direct reports’ skillsets and aptitudes.

  • Identifying and organization of training for direct reports based on this assessment.

  • Assignment and allocation of direct reports to project tasks – based on requirements and skillsets – to satisfy the resourcing and quality needs of the Project Management team.

  • Development and management of coaching & mentoring systems for Junior direct reports, specifically for Members-in-Training.

  • Fostering a team environment of diversity and inclusion.

Technical support and design (secondary role):

  • Managing, leading, or executing projects or EIC&T work.

  • Participation in Quality Assurance / Quality Control (QA/QC) activities.

  • Authentication and stamping of PWPs.

  • Technical input into bid/proposal generation.

Qualification Requirements:

The EIC&T Senior Group Manager possesses the following qualifications and certifications:

  • Professional registration with APEGA (other jurisdictions considered a benefit, but not required).

  • Minimum of 15 years of Professional experience.

  • Firm understanding of engineering concepts related to the following technical areas

    -  preferably SME-level knowledge in minimum one (1):
    • Low voltage / medium voltage electrical engineering and design

    • High voltage/utility electrical engineering and design

    • Power system studies and arc flash analysis

    • Control system/automation design and integration

    • Instrumentation system design and specification

    • Telecommunication/network design

  • Proven, effective experience in managing, coaching and mentoring EIC&T engineers, technologists and designers of varying seniority levels, or teams of such individuals (minimum >20 direct/indirect reports and >5 years).

  • Proficient skills in department budget allocation, resource forecasting and utilization, and workflow management.

  • Excellent communication and client interaction skills, including ability to assist the Business Development team in selling departmental resources and capabilities.

  • Proven track record of displaying effective leadership characteristics, including high emotional intelligence (EQ), integrity/honesty, trustworthiness, and accountability.

  • Demonstrated success in scaling technical departments and associated work practices/procedures to reflect overall organizational growth.

Compensation and Benefits:

  • Hybrid with office located in downtown Calgary, AB (must follow Remote Work Policy)

  • $155,000 - 185,000 annually

  • Inclusion in Discretionary Bonus Program
